October 07 - Windy Wairarapa Wander
By Sandra Bray

With the weather predictions and the confirmed Club member turnout looking dubious for our Sunday run we had to adopt the policy of “… we said that we’d do it, so we will”.

The day dawned beautifully with sunshine! At the start point at the bottom of Haywards we found Paul Cobeldick who unfortunately had to work later that day so had to leave us there, but the rest of the group were ready to roll out only shortly after 10.30 am. It was good to meet Dave & Michelle Nabbs in their alternative German car and also to see the neat back seat arrangement for the twins in Steve & Melanie Parker’s Beetle.

After a windy but good drive over the Rimutaka Hill we had a brief stop in Featherston to regroup, and here we were told that a certain very young member had needed a change of clothes at the top of the hill. Bad luck Jenny & Dom!On arrival in a less windy Martinborough the group decided to lunch at the Wine Centre Café, which is ‘child friendly’ having a special corner for the ‘littlies’ to play in after eating.

Following good food and good conversation we were ready to depart in various directions by about 1.30. Paul & Sue Bonsey headed for some retail therapy in Greytown, while Dave & I went off to investigate a new car museum “Gasoline Heaven” just north of Carterton.

The enthusiastic owners live on the premises and are able to cater for car groups who may need space to gather, inside or out. The display was a bit disappointing unless you happen to be into Fords; I’m not, so I think my favourites would have been a black Almac Cobra and a very neat red and white Nash Metropolitan. Then it was time to head for home as the clouds were gathering on the hills.

Our thanks to those who came out for a few hours and made it all worthwhile. To others, sorry you missed the experience – see you next time perhaps.
